Looking for lessons with an experienced, enthusiastic, and fully qualified guitar teacher? Then you've come to the right place! Lessons are fully tailored to suit you, whether you're just beginning, or an experienced guitarist looking to push yourself further, I can help.

No two people learn in the same way, and this is especially true when it comes to learning a new instrument; it is a teacher's place to inform, encourage, and inspire... to truly share one's passion for music. This approach relies on the formation of an individual, personalised syllabus, which will allow for both maximum progress, and student enjoyment. This is what I offer.

  • Lessons are taught on a weekly basis and cover a full range of theory and practical knowledge, giving every student the ability to excel, whether aiming for fame, or just having some fun.

  • All ages from 6 up are welcome, and it's never too late, my oldest student started at 75!

  • If you are just looking to improve your knowledge of music theory, or perhaps focus on writing your own music, I offer courses to suit.

  • If you've reached a point where you feel stuck, and are no longer making the progress you had hoped for, some structured guidance is just what you need.

I am a passionate, and enthusiastic teacher who is dedicated to your success. I have been a guitarist for 22 years, and a teacher for 14, all the while continuing with extensive work in multiple bands and as a solo performer. Real world musical experience is an undeniable asset, however, through obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Music from The University of Auckland (NZ), and continuing studies in both pedagogical technique, composition, and music theory; I am able to provide tuition which combines both instrumental skill and a firm grounding in sound theoretical knowledge and technique

"Matt is a knowledgeable and professional tutor and his friendly, positive attitude has kept me eager to continue playing over the years. He makes difficult pieces and techniques achievable and less daunting by encouraging progress at a personally appropriate pace. I strongly advocate Matt to musicians at any level of ability and confidence as a welcoming and effective teacher. - Tom Moore"

"Matt Hoyles has been teaching myself and my two children acoustic guitar for two years. Matt is a gifted guitarist, an excellent teacher, and a thoroughly nice person. I began as an adult learner and Matt has proven adept at adjusting his teaching style to suit someone who is starting from scratch, but not 'dumbing down' the process so as to make lessons continuously engaging and challenging.

He has a strong focus on technique and good playing without removing the fun from learning the instrument. Matt's approach to teaching guitar instills his students with great confidence that they are building foundations to their playing that will serve them well in years to come. My two children have greatly enjoyed learning with Matt and he has proven himself equally skilled with younger students. Matt's sublime guitar skills reinforce the kid's perception that they are learning from someone who 'knows what they're doing' and this also provides a source of inspiration for them to practice and improve.

I haven't encountered a better music teacher than Matt, and if you really want to learn with someone who can take you from the basics to advanced playing on almost every form of guitar, then you couldn't ask for a better choice then Matt. I would wholeheartedly and unreservedly recommend him as a guitar & music teacher. Sincerely, Grant Sundin."
